Cashing Out (2024) is a joint report from the Nordic countries on cross-border money laundering via cash transportation. Among other things, the report shows that criminal actors in the Nordic countries collaborate to secure the proceeds of crime and concludes that the overall risk associated with money laundering via cash exports and imports is high.
Although the Nordic countries have many commonalities and in many ways share threats and vulnerabilities in relation to cash laundering, there are differences in currencies and legislation that affect the market and the movement of cash across the countries in different ways, as well as the authorities' ability to manage risks. The report highlights common threats and vulnerabilities and highlights the fact that cash still plays a major role in criminal environments and that we need to work closely together to disrupt the chains.
